New Three-Phase BLDC Motor Control Software

Power Integrations has recently released a new motor control software for three-phase BLDC motor drives. This comprehensive hardware-software solution provides 98.2% efficiency, decreases board space by more than 70%, and needs just three components for current feedback circuitry. BridgeSwitch integrated half-bridge motor driver and easy-to-use Motor- Expert setup and diagnostics tool are also included. Appliances with three-phase motors, such as air conditioner fans, high-speed hair dryers, refrigerator compressors, range hood fans, and water pumps, are the perfect candidates for this solution.

The new motor control software from Power Integrations expands the single-phase code library to include three-phase FOC. Through the Motor-Expert graphical user interface, real-time motor speed and torque adjustments are possible (GUI). The program requires no hardware accelerator block and operates at 48 MHz on any Arm® Cortex®-M0 processor. Additional comparable MCUs can be ported to it. The present modeling approach has successfully passed several static and dynamic test circumstances, including low latency responses to real-time events. It is strong and dependable. Low jitter functioning is guaranteed by the high degree of current precision. The new code enables for the modification of any software layer and is MISRA C-compliant (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association), portable, and modular.

A motor current output signal from BridgeSwitch ICs maps the current flowing through the low-side FREDFET. Lossless current sensing is provided via an internal sense-FET. When the anti-parallel body diode is conducting during commutation, the sensor circuit is unable to provide current information. The current phase signal may be connected directly to the microcontroller’s ADC input thanks to built-in gain amplification. With a high signal-to-noise ratio and thus high precision, the local sensing circuit produces an accurate analog of current. The new software has a reconstruction technique that precisely determines negative phase-current information by utilizing the phase-shifted trigonometric connection between current signals of all three phases.
